We’re launching a new product on Kickstarter!
We launched our company on Kickstarter just 5 years ago. Since the beginning, we've taken a scientific approach to design, so we can invent clothing that’s both comfortable and makes you look great. Today we're taking that approach to the next level, with the Mercury Intelligent Heated Jacket–outerwear that's built for anything, automatically heats to the right temperature, and learns your behavior to get better over time.
Your ideal heat, controlable through voice command or our app.
• Intelligent heat: Our jacket’s built-in heaters are nearly weightless; when not in use, you won't even notice them. A smart thermostat reacts to your environment, learning your preferences as you go.
• Durable and everything-proof: Built to provide protection from the elements, Mercury is ready to repel wind, snow, water, and odors–whatever your adventures throw at you.
• Beautiful & functional: Mercury is designed to look great across activities and lifestyles–from the city to the mountains. Multiple useful pockets, wireless phone charging, a removable hood, and durable construction complete the jacket.
• Ready to go: Out of the box, Mercury is pre-trained, automatically turning on when it senses motion or external temperature drops.
• Voice-controlled: Naturally activate the jacket with your voice through a smart assistant like Amazon Alexa.
We want just the right amount of warmth at just the right time, and each of us is different.
Your very own micro-climate: cozy heat on demand.
At the core of Mercury are three carbon fiber heating elements, strategically placed to disappear into the jacket. At just 100g, flexible, and 1mm thin (that's thinner than a dime), you’ll barely notice the heaters. These heaters can deliver 10 watts of heating power nearly instantaneously, reaching up to 135ºF/57ºC, the same temperature as a cup of coffee.
Mercury creates a microclimate for your body using real-time reactive and proactive heating to constantly adapt heat and optimize your body temperature. Using the accelerometer, body temperature, and outside temperature, Mercury triangulates the perfect amount of heat, so you don't have to worry about overheating. The more feedback you give it, the better it gets - since Mercury automatically learns your preferences.
Pre-programmed and ready to go.
Mercury comes programmed to respond to temperature and motion, based on our research. Just plug the battery in and you’re good to go–whether you’re commuting, walking the dog, or taking that vacation to the North Pole.
Your input into the app helps your jacket learn your preferences and better optimize heat over time.
Replaces the rest of your jacket collection.
This gives you a jacket that can have a wider temp range replace what you thought you needed!
“Alexa, turn on my Jacket.”
Built for your daily routine through voice (or app) control, the Alexa smart assistant skill allows you to preheat your Mercury Intelligent Heated Jacket–so it’s ready to go when you are.
We designed Mercury to be more than just a heated jacket. Even if the heat is “off,” it should be the jacket you want to throw on for everyday wear. Above all, Mercury was designed to look great in any setting–with a simple, clean, and tailored aesthetic. Mercury is also waterproof, windproof, high-stretch, odor resistant, and incredibly breathable. We'd be surprised if you'll ever need another jacket.
A sleek, simple silhouette.
A 2-layer waterproof breathable membrane keeps you dry in harsh conditions.
S.Café liner uses coffee beans to absorb and neutralize odor.
4-way stretch shell provides ultimate mobility.
Heated hand-warmer Pockets–great for those times when you forget the gloves!
Charge your phone on the go with the jacket’s battery pack.
No worries, it’s TSA friendly–making it the perfect travel jacket.
Machine washable for easy care.
Clean and capable: four primary pockets, with two additional slots for smartphone and battery.
There’s a vest, too.
For our friends in slightly warmer climates, or for not-so-cold days up north–the vest can be your only travel companion. It’s got all of the same specs as our jacket, though the total garment weight will necessarily be different.
Mercury's Tech Specs make it the most technically sound jacket on the market today.
The Mercury heating system runs on a standard USB, 2-amp output battery. With a 10,000mAh battery you can get up to 4.5 hours of continuous heat at max power. Using our machine learning to control power output, we are able to power approximately 1 week of commuting use on a single charge (based on an average 20-30-minute commute).
Design & research
Our design process is grounded in the intersection between form and function. We start with you, the wearer–and your day–and use that as a point of inspiration for our products. For the Mercury, we started by thinking about how to make the commute more comfortable, focusing on temperature regulation as the main challenge expressed during our research.
Infrared thermal imaging analysis and initial heat modeling concept.
The initial 2D technical specification of the Mercury Jacket.
3D modeling of Mercury allowed us to optimize fit for motion.
Testing the thermal capacity of the garment in various states via thermal imaging.
Calibrating and training the acceleration feed from the Mercury Jacket.
Wearing the Mercury Jacket on a flight from New York to Boston. BlueTooth 4 LE is allowed during flight by the FAA.
Developing the custom microcontroller system with thermal and acceleration inputs as well as power control.
Our utility patent is submitted and currently pending.
Our team launching this Kickstarter project: 10...9…8…
Our team is a mix of engineers and product designers with deep expertise in the apparel sector. Jarlath, who led the design process, was the former design director at Brooks Brothers and Theory. Sherri, who led product development, has worked in development at numerous outdoor and athletic brands. Brian and Gihan do the product engineering and production—with backgrounds as mechanical and chemical engineers, respectively. The rest of the team keeps the clothing on the shelves and makes sure you look good.
Our partners
Developing the Mercury Intelligent Heated Jacket required expertise across many disciplines: softgoods, hardware, and software all coming together to create a product that simply solved the challenge of controllable heat generation. We wouldn't be here without awesome partners who make our project possible. Here's where we get nerdy about our teams and the incredible things they create!
Dephy: Boston-based human-robotics design and engineering firm spun out of the MIT Media Lab, Dephy has driven the wearable hardware and simple user experience of Mercury.
MEC AddHeat: As the world’s leader in wearable heating devices, this team relentlessly designs, builds, and tests heating elements for optimal heating, durability, and safety.
Nithya Thadani, CEO of Rain (a world-class digital innovation firm): "As the first piece of intelligent clothing that users can control with their voice, this jacket is pushing the category beyond stationary Smart Home devices, and into Smart Lifestyle."
Singtex:A Taiwan-based team that we’ve been working with since our second Kickstarter (almost 5 years!), Singtex is family to us. They are true industry leaders in sustainable fabric and garment production. BlueWave is a garment producer for numerous outdoor and athletic brands This team is highly technical, using computerized cutting machines, computerized sewing machines, ultrasonic welding, laser cutting, and bonding all in-house. Blue Wave is family-owned and operated, and has some amazing quality standards–both for garments, and for their working environment.
Why Kickstarter?
Ministry of Supply was born right here on Kickstarter. We wouldn't be here without your support, so it felt right to come back to our loyal community to share our latest project with you first. We are forever grateful for your continued support, kindness, feedback, and encouraging words. We’ve been on a long journey, and with your help we’re just getting started!
Risks and challenges
We have two Kickstarter campaigns under our belts, and have been in the clothing business since 2012. We have our manufacturers lined up, and our other production teams are waiting for our signal. At this point, we know what we're doing!
Of course, there can always be unforeseen challenges when it comes to producing a product. At that point, we plan on being completely transparent with our backers should anything go awry—you can depend on us! And while our design team might use discretion to make any tweaks during production that amplify the function, durability, or aesthetic of the garment–you can rest assured, we're deeply committed to, and excited about delivering a world-class product that we know you'll enjoy for a long time to come.
So in short, we're super confident we can deliver and incredibly high quality product, and on time - and are so, so grateful that you're on this journey with us!
