Singer Smith

Shells

We first got to know Singer Smith when we opened our San Francisco store back in 2014. In the time we’ve known him, Singer’s travels have taken him to Nepal, Laos, Cambodia, and Australia (among other countries). He’s also been goat-packing in Utah’s Uinta mountains, climbing walls in Yosemite, writing, and speaking about his adventures. When asked to describe his commute, he responded, “I’ve heard of those. They sound grim.”

Singer topped the list for our first edition of Customer of the Month because of his approach to clothing (and perhaps life): Smart, casual, functional, and versatile. The most important characteristics of his wardrobe are quick-drying breathability and stretch. These characteristics roll up into a minimalist wardrobe (three MOS dress shirts, plus a pair of Going Places 5-Pockets), and the flexibility to hop on a plane to anywhere in a moment’s notice.

We checked in with Singer just after New Year’s to find out where he is in the world, and to get to know what he’s up to.

How do you take your coffee?
Latte, in the smallest cup available. In America I to ask to be shown the cup first and indicate the exact ratios visually.

What are your interests?
Boundless, but primarily economics, languages, and history.

What is one thing you wish you had time for?
My dilemma is the exact inverse of most sensible adults; I have no problem putting aside the ostensibly responsible options, making sacrifices, and taking the time to do what I want. Now that you mention it, I really should grow up.

What type of music do you listen to?
I mostly fill my ears with lectures and languages but when music comes up it ranges from Thai pop, British trip-hop and acid jazz, Arabic rap, to pre-1980 country and The Dead.

What's a place you'd love to visit that you haven't been to yet?
Iran.

Anything else we should know?
I appreciate the simplicity of design that MOS strives for and can’t say enough about my enthusiasm for performance clothing that looks sharp. I like never having to think about what shirt will match what pants; anything I grab essentially matches any other item. Included is a photograph of the entire contents of my mild-weather travel kit. As you can see, once I get dressed I’m carrying close to nothing. The only things I’m likely to add when travelling to other destinations (colder, more adventurous, or Europe) would be a long sleeve shirt, a second pair of pants of a different weight, a Going Places blazer, a warm jacket, and waterproof leather low-top hiking/dress shoes with socks.
